Meet the Short-Tailed Roundleaf Bat
The short-tailed roundleaf bat (genus Hipposideros) is a small, insect-eating bat found across parts of West Africa. Its name comes from its unique “leaf-like” nose structure, which helps the bat echolocate—sending out high-frequency calls to navigate in complete darkness.
While they may not get the same attention as elephants or giraffes, short-tailed roundleaf bats are essential allies in nature. These nocturnal creatures spend their nights flitting through forests and farmlands, devouring crop pests and keeping insect populations in check. Some species within the roundleaf family also play important roles as pollinators and seed dispersers, helping plants regenerate and forests stay strong.
