Guardians of the Giants: How MarAlliance Is Protecting Whale Sharks Through Science and Community

Whale sharks - the gentle giants of the ocean - are among the most awe-inspiring creatures on the planet. These enormous filter feeders glide through tropical seas, playing a vital role in marine ecosystems. Yet despite their size and importance, whale sharks face mounting threats from habitat loss, climate change, and human disturbance. Protecting them requires dedication, knowledge and collaboration—and that’s where MarAlliance shines.

Uniting Science and Communities for Conservation

Since 2014, MarAlliance has been a driving force in marine conservation, especially across the Mesoamerican region, especially in Mexico, Belize, Honduras and Panama. Their mission centers on protecting marine megafauna - including whale sharks - by combining rigorous scientific research with grassroots, community-based management.

While their core efforts focus on the Mesoamerican region, MarAlliance has also collaborated with local partners and organizations across the world to support whale shark monitoring and conservation. By integrating traditional knowledge with modern science, MarAlliance has built a powerful network of ocean stewards working to ensure a future for these magnificent animals.

Community-Led Monitoring: The Heart of the Effort

Community science is at the core of MarAlliance’s approach. They partner with coastal communities to gather essential data on whale shark and other marine megafauna behavior, distribution, and population trends. Through training and resource-sharing, local fishers and stakeholders become active participants in conservation, playing a direct role in monitoring and protecting marine life.

This grassroots approach makes conservation locally relevant, inclusive, and sustainable - strengthening efforts from the bottom up.

Spotlight on Belize: A Unique Case Study

Belize provides a compelling example of how science and community collaboration leads to impact. At Gladden Spit, once famous for whale shark gatherings during fish spawning events, MarAlliance is helping local communities understand the reasons behind declining sightings. Their research, which you can explore here, aims to identify what’s driving these changes and inform targeted conservation responses.

A foundational study on whale sharks at Gladden Spit - representing the first whale shark population study in the Western Hemisphere - highlighted just how complex monitoring these animals can be. Conducted between 1998 and 2003, researchers documented 521 whale shark encounters linked to seasonal snapper spawning. Using spot patterns and scars, 106 individual sharks were identified, with an average size of 6.3 meters. Notably, 86% of the sexed individuals were immature males, suggesting patterns of size and sexual segregation. Seventy sharks were tagged, providing key insights and building a critical knowledge base for the region.

This research, conducted with local tour operators and fishers, fed into a regional whale shark tour guide training program and ultimately led to national legislation for the protection of whale sharks in Belize. It was so successful that the tour guide training program was replicated at the world’s largest whale shark aggregation in Quintana Roo, Mexico, and management plans were enacted to protect the sharks.

Raising the Next Generation of Ocean Stewards

MarAlliance believes lasting conservation starts with education. Their youth outreach programs inspire curiosity and care for the ocean through snorkeling adventures, marine science workshops, and interactive exploration of marine life.

Some educational activities even use virtual reality headsets so kids can experience how it feels to "swim" with whale sharks, bringing them face to face with these gentle giants in a safe, immersive way. These experiences help young people see themselves in marine careers and conservation roles, laying the foundation for the next generation of scientists and ocean advocates.

Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future for the Ocean’s Giants

Through grassroots management, scientific research, and deep community engagement, MarAlliance is charting a hopeful path for whale sharks. Their work shows that conserving marine megafauna means supporting the ecosystems - and communities - that sustain them.
