Make Your Own Seed Paper This Earth Day!
Plants play a vital role in everyone's life, even carnivores like the Komodo dragon.
In fact, baby Komodo dragons spend the first year of their lives living in the trees. Without the cover that trees and plants provide, young Komodo dragons wouldn't have a home.
In this activity, you'll learn how to make seed paper as a fun way to share the love of wildlife with friends and family. Making seed paper takes about 2-3 days, but the results are worth the wait!

🌱 How to Make Seed Paper (With a Blender, Jar, or by Hand!)
Making seed paper is a fun, eco-friendly DIY craft you can do with minimal tools. Use a blender, a jar, or just your hands—whatever works best for you!
🧺 What You’ll Need:
-
Recycled paper (scrap paper, newspaper, old notebooks, mail, etc.)
-
Water
-
Small seeds (wildflowers or herbs) Save the bees!
-
Large bowl or container
-
Blender, jar with lid, or just your hands
-
Rolling pin or large water bottle
-
Towel or wax paper (for drying)
-
Scissors or cookie cutters (optional, for shaping)
-
Dried flowers (optional, for decoration)
-
Large strainer (optional, for draining excess water)
🛠️ Steps:
1. Tear the Paper
Rip your recycled paper into small pieces (about 1–2 inches).
2. Soak
Place the pieces in a bowl and cover with warm water.
Soak for 15–30 minutes—or overnight for easier mashing.
3. Make the Pulp
Choose your method:
-
With a Blender: Add soaked paper and water to a blender. Blend until smooth.
-
With a Jar: Put the soaked paper and some water into a large jar with a lid. Seal it and shake vigorously for several minutes until the paper breaks down into pulp.
-
By Hand: Mash the soaked paper with your hands, a spoon, or a stick until it becomes a pulp.
4. Add the Seeds
Sprinkle in your seeds and mix gently by hand.
⚠️ Don’t blend the seeds—they could be damaged!
5. Form the Paper
Scoop out a portion of pulp and press it flat on a table on top of a towel using:
-
Your hands
-
A rolling pin
-
Two flat boards
Shape it thin and even. Cookie cutters make it fun!
6. Dry
Let it air dry for 24–48 hours. Use a fan or sunny window to speed things up.
7. Cut or Shape (Optional)
Once completely dry, trim your paper into hearts, circles, or gift tags.
🌼 Tips:
-
Don’t use too many seeds—they need space to grow and won’t stick well in crowded pulp.
-
Add flower petals for color and decoration.
-
Stir seeds in after the pulp is made—never blend them.
-
Store dry seed paper in a cool, dry place until you're ready to plant or gift.
-
Great way to celebrate Earth Day!
